Minlib Dallh, OP, PhD | Sufi Women and Mystics: Models of Sanctity, Erudition, and Political Leadership
2023 Aquinas Lecture
Speaker: Minlib Dallh, OP, PhD
This lecture counters the dominant narrative in the West regarding the assumption that all women suffer from inferior status in Islam. First, I will explore the astounding life and mystical treatises of Jahan Ara Begum (d. 1681), a Sufi princess of the Mughal Empire in the subcontinent of India. Second, I turn to Nana Asma’u (d. 1865), the most prolific female scholar and mystic of her generation, from the Sokoto Caliphate in pre-colonial Sub-Saharan Africa. Both women made remarkable contributions to the mystical dimensions of Islam (Sufism).
